Playing the Cards by Karen ‘Maeby’ Bates
pass the boat with the strange fellow and his wife,
or stop and stare? they call me over.
i am hesitant to walk on their boat, but i do.
i sit down when they tell me to.
captain diamond is playing cards,
captain’s wife, queen, plays with the tarot cards.
pick a card, any card – both of them say.
two different games here, but the same life.
i pick the cards.
they nod to each other and
begin to tell my fortune using the cards
that i picked. i can’t tell you what they said.
it’s a secret.
but they also didn’t tell me everything.
life is about playing your cards right.
it’s actually how you play your cards.
i’m all about creating and paving my own path
choosing my own destiny,
making my own dreams happen…
directing my very own ship to a place that i can call home.
it’s an adventure, you know,
getting here…and how i got here.
all i know is i’m going to keep playing my cards right
because i belong here.
shipwrecked.
If you guys didn’t get to read the previous entry, I said THANK YOU SO MUCH for all of the comments you guys gave me! I am completely blown away and so very thankful for the positive comments. I am going to try to return the favor soon. I’m still so busy, glad to remember it’s Tuesday so I can drop in with a poem.
PS – The picture of the cake? That’s the cake my husband and I had on our wedding/anniversary October 1st.
TWO pointers about the reasoning for this cake…
1) In order to lead a great life, you must always play your cards right… especially to get what/where you want.
2) King of diamonds = husband (diamond in the rough) and me, the Queen of hearts (well, i love love…and I’m Queen ;o)
